(IsraelNN.com)

The ideological bottom line may remain the same, but those looking to Aliyah may finally have large financial incentives to cross the ocean.

“For the first time in history, the Israeli economy is looking better than the American economy”, says Danny Oberman, executive vice president of operations at Nefesh B’Nefesh. A leading organization which finds and assists Jews wishing to make Aliyah [immigration to Israel], the group has reported an average of 25 new inquiries each day from people looking to begin the application process. “We are seeing an unprecedented level of interest from North America,” says Oberman, “and it’s not just people who have lost their jobs but people who don’t see a serious upside in the near future.”

Powered by WebAds

Click here to hear interview with Oberman.

For young singles and couples, the advantages afforded by Israel’s current economic edge are especially appealing. The job market is wider for recent university graduates, and families with young children can find more affordable Jewish or college education in Israel than back in the U.S. and Canada. Israeli health insurance, free for between the first six to 12 months for new arrivals and amounting to $50 to $100 a month after that, is also a cheaper option than many health insurance plans in the U.S.

Immigrants also are given a discount on car purchases and are eligible for free education if they are under the age of 27. For those generating income from overseas, no taxes are taken for the first 10 years of residence. These lower costs, combined with an overly burdened and strained American economy, are enticing more North American Jews than ever to emigrate.

In 2008, Nefesh B’Nefesh reported that 3,000 immigrants to Israel were from North America. This year, the organization is expecting upwards of 4,000.

“What we’re seeing is…people who had considered Aliyah, people who had visited Israel in the past, people who had a connection, but who stayed in North America because they were doing well; they were comfortable,” says Oberman. Now, however, with Israel faring considerably better in the global economic crisis, families are in a better position than before to line up their ideological and fiduciary concerns.

“Anybody who has visited here has seen that the opportunities here, and the ways kids are brought up and the social environment is different than North America. It’s a healthy environment… For anyone who’s looking for a different set of values, Israel’s definitely an option.”

About Bernard Betel Centre:

The Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living is a learning and wellness centre committed to maximizing the quality of life for seniors in the community and reflecting Jewish values. (Approved by the Board of Directors, April 2000)

WHY COME   TO THE CENTRE?
At the Bernard Betel Centre, we’re accustomed to hearing people ask themselves where would they be without us?

People come to us for a variety of reasons. Retirement and ageing represent significant stages in one’s life and are accompanied by many changes which can affect health and an individual’s quality of life. Redefining one’s identity outside the workforce, after the loss of a spouse or post child rearing years is a difficult and challenging transition and often requires the need for seniors to re-establish a sense of purpose and self esteem. Research has shown that ageing is a continuous process and maintaining an active lifestyle can delay the onset of many diseases, increases agility and mobility and extends an individual’s ability to live independently in the community.

This video features Sharon Chodriker, the staff contact for the Centre in charge of the Lifelong Learning Institute. Sharon explains why her vision of having community youth come in to the centre to hear the information about Facebook, YouTube and Crime Stoppers together with the seniors was a good idea.

That’s where we come in. We offer one stop access to a myriad of recreational, educational, wellness, community support programs as well as an on site Cafeteria. Not surprisingly, seniors come to our Centre and access programs from our different operations simultaneously during their visit. Where else, but at the Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living can you take in lectures from leading scholars on topics as diverse as mass media or religion in the modern age; converse in English, Yiddish, Russian, French, Polish and Hebrew; feast on the best haimishe, kosher cuisine in Canada; indulge in creative writing classes and discussions on Yiddish literature; attend regular Synagogue services; receive the benefits of morning Tai Chi classes and free monthly screening clinics; get help from counselors and support groups that aid you in dealing with Parkinson’s, Osteoporosis, Low Vision, Sleep/Wake Disorders and Nutrition; go on out of country trips or the Stratford Theatre Festival, while you mingle with the most interesting people in town? Trained instructors deliver the vast majority of our programs; a few are facilitated/ led by volunteers and / or paid staff.

In addition to attending programs or accessing services, the Centre’s philosophy embraces member involvement, particularly in the design, implementation and evaluation of its programs. There are numerous opportunities at the Centre including:

participating in Members’ Council and or one        of its 19 Committees;

representing the membership on our Board of        Directors, its committees and Task Forces;

Educating people of all ages about elderly        abuse throughout Ontario;

Tutoring students through one of our many        Intergenerational Programs;

Teaching classes and or supervising workshops;

Lobbying various levels of government on        issues of concern to seniors;

Supporting our Community Support Programs by        visiting isolated seniors and performing telephone reassurance checks;

Acting as ambassadors for the Centre by speaking to groups on behalf of the United Way and UJA Federation.

Ultimately, through member involvement, health promotion and community collaboration, our programs and services strive to achieve:

Independence

Self-worth

Physical and emotional well being

Moishe Alexander and the Canadian Funding Corporation donated $72.00 CDN to UNICEF Canada (http://www.unicef.org) in 2009.

About UNICEF:

UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and the variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. That makes us unique among world organizations, and unique among those working with the young.

We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We believe that we can, together, advance the cause of humanity.

We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future.

We promote girls’ education – ensuring that they complete primary education as a minimum – because it benefits all children, both girls and boys. Girls who are educated grow up to become better thinkers, better citizens, and better parents to their own children.

We act so that all children are immunized against common childhood diseases, and are well nourished, because it is wrong for a child to suffer or die from a preventable illness.

We work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people because it is right to keep them from harm and enable them to protect others. We help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to live their lives with dignity.

We involve everyone in creating protective environments for children. We are present to relieve suffering during emergencies, and wherever children are threatened, because no child should be exposed to violence, abuse or exploitation.

UNICEF upholds the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular. We work for the Millennium Development Goals and for the progress promised in the United Nations Charter. We strive for peace and security. We work to hold everyone accountable to the promises made for children.

We are part of the Global Movement for Children – a broad coalition dedicated to improving the life of every child. Through this movement, and events such as the United Nations Special Session on Children, we encourage young people to speak out and participate in the decisions that affect their lives.

We work in 190 countries through country programmes and National Committees. We are UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Moishe Alexander and Canadian Funding Corp. have donated $25.00 CDN to the Canadian Burn Foundation (http://www.canadianburnfoundation.org) in 2009.

About the Canadian Burn Foundation:

The Canadian Burn Foundation (CBF) was founded in 1998. Our goal is to provide programs and support for burn survivors across Canada and around the world.

Each year, thousands of Canadians are seriously burned.

-In North America, a child is burned every 7.5 minutes in the home by a hot liquid.
-Incidence of serious burn injury for children in developing countries is significantly higher. One of our primary goals is to drastically reduce these figures. We work to achieve this goal through ongoing education and prevention programs that are available free of charge.

Before 1980, few serious burn victims survived their accidents. Medical advances have made it possible, even for a person with over 90% of their body burned, to survive. CBF continues to work with burn survivors and their families to enable them to live life as best they can under their challenging circumstances.

CBF provides new or refurbished computers to adult and child burn survivors, enabling them to access the internet to connect with friends and other burn survivors. We also provide financial support to make it possible for adult and child burn survivors to attend burn camps, retreats and conferences.

CBF is actively engaged in international development, sharing our knowledge and assisting countries including South Africa and China in developing successful support programs. Through our international efforts, we aim to make the world a better place for burn survivors.
